Soňa Mrázová: Sock-y

Curator: Michaela Malíčková

Exhibition opening: Sunday, 8 June 2025 at 5:00 PM

Soňa Mrázová (1968), born in Nitra, graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Kremnica, majoring in industrial design. She was with the Puppet Theatre in Nitra. Since 1999 she makes her own original puppets and toys, interior design, chamber painting, ceramics and spatial objects. She exhibits throughout Slovakia and internationally – in the Czech cities of Kroměříž, Olomouc, Prague or in Hainburg or at the Farrach Castle in Austria. She has always remained actively in contact with the theatre: as set and costume designer she contributed to productions for adults, though particularly those for children, staged in Žilina, Martin, Banská Bystrica, Prešov, Bratislava, Pezinok, and Nitra.

Ms Mrázová creates the project Sock-y project in the spirit of the character of the international event 2025Divadelná Nitra. The name itself is ambiguous in meaning and signals the multi-layered potential of the exhibition: linguistic, semantic and material. On one level, she thematises ordinariness/commonness through the theme of socks, on the other she unpacks the theme of the life style on social periphery. In a playful synergy of seemingly unrelated themes, she creates a series of monotypes and textile objects. In their source code the viewer is invited to re-identify her distinctive artistic language and characteristic ways of thinking. Her mind is again mightily associative, contextual, unconventional. She takes us from the triteness of socks to the House of Fashion as a “place of memory” that, in its various functions has long been a part of the Nitra identity.
