Macbeth

Macbeth from 1847 is part of the early stage of Giuseppe Verdi’s opus. It is his first opera title, created on the theme of the great English playwright. Shakespeare’s work and Verdi’s opera are a dark drama of power, tyranny, violence, paranoia of rulers, but also of one unfulfilled marriage. The impermanence of power and the injustice of autocracy lead with inexorable logic to the disintegration of society, to the madness of tyrants, and their downfall. Verdi reworked the opera for the performance in Paris in 1865. This version is largely the basis of our production that is not intended to be a mere museum reconstruction of the famous story. He brings this story closer to the present, turns it into an intimate, personal and everyday drama. Moreover, he identifies within biting humour that enables the spectators to reflect much more clearly on themselves and the surrounding world.

Anton Korenči graduated in stage directing and dramaturgy at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. He then worked as a lecturer at the Department of Directing and Dramaturgy. He cooperates with the Slovak National Theatre, the Košice National Theatre, Slovak Radio and Television, the Bratislava Puppet Theatre and The Alexander Duchnovič Theatre. In 2017, he founded AntiTeatro – an independent platform for professional performing art. Its founding and representative production was based on the essays of Elias Canetti’s Crowds & Power that was nominated by the Academy of Theatre-Makers for the 2018/2019 Production of the Season award. In 2020, he lectured online on for Stanford University on another AntiTeatro project, The Decline of the West. Since 2020, he is part of artistic management of the Košice National Drama Theatre.
