Jumpcore

The young Polish dancer and choreographer Paweł Sakowicz, who works with leading Polish directors and European stages, pushes himself to the limit of his physical potential in this musically and dance intensive solo, a mix of dance in the rave style and ballet classics. The inspiration comes from the fate of his predecessor. Freddie Herko, an American actor, dancer, choreographer and musician, was an influential figure and star of the New York underground of the 1960s. He co-founded the internationally acclaimed Judson Dance Theater and acted in several Warhol films. It is still unclear whether he did plan to end his life by suicide. He took a bath, played Mozart’s Coronation Mass and started dancing naked in the living room of his friend’s flat. As the Sanctus played, he took off running, jumped from a fifth-story window, and landed on Cornelia Street. Ballet dancers allegedly believe they can fly. Indeed – it holds true in the hundredth of a second of the jump. In addition to Jumpcor, Sakowicz will present at Divadelná Nitra his latest work Amando.

Paweł Sakowicz (1988) is a choreographer and dancer. He graduated in political science at the University of Warsaw, and choreography and performance at the London Contemporary Dance School. He largely creates his own original movement performances, yet also often collaborates with stage and film directors and other artists (e.g. Ramona Nagabczyńska, Marta Ziółek, Iza Szostak, Alex Baczyński-Jenkins, Rebecca Lazier, Isabelle Schad, Peter Pleyer, Joanna Leśnierowska, Magda Szpecht, Łukasz Twarkowski, Michał Borczuch, Anna Smolar). In his artistic research, he focuses on the history of dance and cultural appropriation in choreography. His works (e.g. TOTAL, Jumpcore, Masakra, Drama, Amando, and sound installation Vortex) were presented at the Polish Dance Platform, the Divine Comedy Festival in Krakow, the Val-de-Marne Dance Biennale, the Susch Museum, the Sanctarcangelo Festival and elsewhere. In 2016, Sakowicz was nominated for the Politika Passport Award, a major prize in culture. He is a visiting teacher at the Institute of Polish Culture at the University of Warsaw.
